No plans to reopen Oasis building

Source : Straits Times - 14 Apr 2009

THE Oasis building, a popular eating destination in Kallang, will not be reopened even though there is a delay in the development of the Sports Hub in the area, Parliament heard yesterday.

The building, which housed popular seafood and other eateries, was taken over by the Government last year. A proposed public water-sports centre is to be built there as part of the Sports Hub complex.

But even though a contract between the Government and the consortium building the Sports Hub has yet to be signed, there are no plans to reopen the building, Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said yesterday.

Reopening the building will entail huge costs. And once an agreement is reached, work will begin very quickly. ‘It’s best not to raise false hopes and reopen up the place only to shut it down again at very short notice,’ he said.

He was responding to Mr Seah Kian Peng (Marine Parade GRC) who asked if the site could be reopened so businesses could rent space there on a temporary basis.

Dr Balakrishnan also gave an update on the $1.87-billion Sports Hub project, which has stalled as the consortium responsible for its development has difficulty securing funds. The Government is waiting for the group to get back with a revised proposal, he said.
