The Jewel Box at Mount Faber celebrated the opening of its new extension with much fanfare on Monday night.
It is not just any ordinary extension to the main building which houses the cable car station opposite the resort island of Sentosa. The new structure, a restaurant, utilises green architectural concepts.
That is why the three mature Angsana trees in the area were not chopped down and were instead incorporated into the design of the glass building.
In addition, the wooden arcs in the building utilise an environmentally friendly technology where pieces of laminated timber are glued together.
This practice requires six times less energy compared to what is usually needed to produce a steel beam.
Speaking at the opening, Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry, Mr S Iswaran, said that against the backdrop of the current bleak economic outlook, Singapore needs to continually innovate and re-position its value proposition as a tourism destination.
And new tourism products like the Jewel Box, can add sparkle to the island-state’s international attractiveness.
