CITY Developments Ltd (CDL) said yesterday it has met many of the social and environmental performance targets it set for 2008.
According to its second Sustainability Report released yesterday, the developer reduced energy usage 5 per cent and cut its carbon emissions by close to 5 per cent.
CDL said it set targets to cut the amount electricity and water consumed and the construction waste generated on its sites. Data provided by its main contractors is detailed in the Sustainability Report.
Similar targets were set and met for electricity and water consumption and paper use and recycling at CDL’s industrial and commercial buildings and corporate office, the report says.
The report covers more than CDL’s environmental efforts, extending to write-ups on its corporate social responsibility efforts, corporate governance, risk management, employee engagement and community involvement.
The report also meets a higher standard of reporting – level B+, up from level C that CDL chalked up in its first report last year. These levels are checked against the guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative, a sustainability reporting standard backed by the United Nations Environment Programme.
CDL managing director Kwek Leng Joo said: ‘Over the years, we’ve seen many more enquiries from international investors and researchers requesting greater disclosure of data on sustainability and environmental management.
‘We believe this is a growing global trend. Companies – especially those with international presence – cannot ignore this call if they see their role as corporate citizens.’
