Duo open hostel for ‘flashpackers’

LONG-TIME pals Cheryl Ou and Magdalene Wan recently opened a hostel targeted at ‘flashpackers’ – a new breed of affluent backpackers who share the adventurous outlook of traditional budget travellers but have more cash to spend.

Their 22-bed hostel, called Habitat Hostels, in Devonshire Road features self-enclosed ‘pods’ – each with a bed, ambient backlight and a shelf.

The hostel also has free high-speed wireless Internet access, a reading light, one power point, and an air purifier and iPod docking station in every room.

Ms Ou said they started the hostel as they enjoyed meeting new people while they were backpacking together. She believes the standard of hostels in Singapore is not on a par with those in Europe.

The duo want to provide a great location and decor, combined with clean rooms and bathrooms, and a social atmosphere. ‘It has to do with passion as well – we want to do this on our own and run it by ourselves,’ Ms Ou said.
